The good news is that Casserole Diplomacy and Other Stories: An On Spec Retrospective Anthology has launched, which includes my story “More Than Salt”. (Tyche Books also published the Canadian superhero anthology Masked Mosaic.)
I’m very proud to have been part of On Spec‘s 25-year history. I made my first four story sales to them in the early 2000s, and then I helped them out with their website for a while. I met some awesome Canadian writers and editors through my connection with that magazine, and my publication credits helped me join SF Canada, where I met even more awesome people in the community. I owe a lot to On Spec.
I wrote “More Than Salt” over 12 years (gah!) ago for submission to their Shakespeare theme issue. Enough time has passed that I don’t actually remember writing it–although I remember rewriting to Jena Snyder’s editorial input (thanks Jena!)–so it’s like it was written by someone else. I went over my proof assuming I’d be mortified by this cocky twentysomething but finished it thinking, Whoa, I wrote that?
So the bad news is that they’ve lost their Canada Council funding. You can read managing editor Diane Walton’s post about it here. I could name-drop a veritable Who’s Who in Canadian sf who have been published in On Spec, and it saddens me that current up-and-comers may not get the chance. If you can support the magazine, please do.
